Methodology

We believe in showing our work. Here's how MoneyMetric HQ calculators are built.

Standard financial formulas

MoneyMetric HQ calculators use well-established financial formulas — the same amortization, compound-interest, and present-value equations used across the finance industry. Each calculator page lists the specific formula and assumptions it applies.

Assumptions are stated

Where a calculation relies on an assumption (for example, a default tax rate or compounding frequency), we state it clearly so you can adjust it to match your situation. Defaults are chosen to be reasonable for a general audience, not personalized advice.

Results are estimates

Calculators produce estimates based on the inputs you provide. They do not account for every real-world variable — fees, regional taxes, lender-specific terms, and market fluctuations can all change actual outcomes. Always confirm specifics with your provider.

Sources

Formula references and source notes accompany each calculator and guide where applicable. We prioritize widely-accepted, peer-reviewed financial principles. See our sources & references page for the foundations behind our math.

Updates

We review and update our methodology as standards evolve. If you believe a calculation could be improved, please contact us.
