Understanding your auto numbers

Monthly Payments

Your loan amount, APR, and term together set the monthly payment. A longer term lowers the payment but raises total interest over the life of the loan.

Total Interest

Longer financing terms can reduce your monthly payment while increasing total interest paid. Compare terms to see the trade-off between cash flow and total cost.

Vehicle Depreciation

Vehicles generally lose value over time, though actual depreciation varies by vehicle, mileage, condition, and market conditions.

Total Ownership Costs

Insurance, maintenance, fuel, taxes, registration, and other ongoing costs all affect what a vehicle truly costs to own beyond the payment itself.

Auto Calculator FAQs

Common auto questions, answered

How is a monthly auto loan payment calculated?

Using the amortization formula M = P × [r(1+r)^n] / [(1+r)^n − 1], where P is the amount financed, r is the monthly interest rate (APR ÷ 12), and n is the number of monthly payments (term in months). At 0% APR, the payment is simply P ÷ n.

Does a longer auto loan term cost more?

A longer term lowers each monthly payment but increases the total interest you pay over the life of the loan, because you borrow the same principal for more months at the same rate.

How much car can I afford?

Affordability depends on your monthly transportation budget minus recurring costs like insurance, fuel, maintenance, and registration. The Car Affordability Calculator subtracts those costs first, then solves for the loan principal — and therefore the vehicle price — that the remaining payment supports.

Is leasing or buying a vehicle better?

Leasing typically has lower monthly payments but no ownership equity at the end. Buying costs more per month but builds equity. The right choice depends on how long you keep a vehicle, your mileage, and whether you value ownership. Our Lease vs. Buy Calculator compares the estimated costs.

When does refinancing an auto loan make sense?

Refinancing can make sense if interest rates have fallen, your credit has improved, or you need a lower monthly payment. It may reduce your rate or payment but could extend the term and raise total interest. The Auto Refinance Calculator compares your current loan against a new one.

How does vehicle depreciation affect ownership costs?

Depreciation is the loss in a vehicle's value over time. It affects resale and trade-in value and is often the single largest ownership cost. The Vehicle Depreciation Calculator projects value over time using annual depreciation assumptions.
